Athletic Bilbao and Valladolid played out one of three no-score draws in one of the lowest scoring Saturdays on record, putting the home side's UEFA spot at risk and helping the visitors inch towards safety. The local players lined up for the photo call with messages of support on their shirts for Gurpegui, who had just been suspended for two years after failing a drug test, despite claims of proof by the club that his body generates Nandrolone naturally.

Both sides came in to this match unbeaten in the last month or so, and Valladolid manager Pepe Moré was defending a successful personal record of seven visits to San Mamés without a single loss. despite the lack of goals it was an open game of football, and either could have scored in an even ninety minutes. Bizzarri saved from Ezquerro in the opening minutes and Etxeberría shot into the side nettings close to half time with two players better positioned in front of goal, and Ciric headed over for the visitors a few minutes earlier.

Chances too after the break, with Aranzubia standing his ground well to save from Aganzo soon after the restart, and Athletic having two penalty appeals turned down, the first for a foul on Urzaiz and then a possible hand ball by Colsa. Tiko came on for the last few minutes and tested Bizzarri with a free kick, but soon afterwards González Vázquez called it a day and both sides went home with another point in the bag.
