Athletic Bilbao moved up into sixth position in the table, the much coveted UEFA spot, after they trounced their local rivals Osasuna 1-5. Heynckes's side took their opportunities well, and from only four scoring opportunities, they went in at the break three goals up. An early header from Karanka was blocked on the line by Gancedo, but on the quarter hour mark a long, low free kick from Aitor Ocio caught Sanzol napping, the late swerve on the ball taking it past the surprised keeper. Osasuna had a couple of chances themselves but Rosado shot wide and Aranzubia saved from Manfredini, and Ezquerro extended the visitors lead after Urzaiz passed across from the left. That deflated the home side, and five minutes before the break Izquierdo's attempt to clear Ezquerro's effort only landed at the feet of Yeste who had the easiest of tasks in scoring the third goal.

Aguirre decided he needed more fire power, and brought on his top two goalscorers Rivero and John Aloisi at the break. But Aloisi only lasted five minutes before he was shown the red card for pushing Aranzubia in the face in retaliation for a high challenge, leaving his side with ten men. A quarter of an hour later Arriaga got his first goal for his side with a solo effort, and although Rivero headed one back from Valdo's long cross, Karanka added to Athletic's tally with a shot from outside of the area. The defeat leaves Osasuna down in the bottom four of the table, last week's win at Atlético their only one in the last ten games.
