Osasuna spoilt the centenary celebrations at Atlético Madrid, beating their hosts 0-1 to put a dampener on the whole evening. It was one hundred years to the day that the club had been formed, and the party had started several hours before, with fans unfurling the world's largest flag around the city, a paella being prepared for 5,000 people and a series of other events taking place in and around the stadium. The 55,000 capacity ground was full at kick off, with a host of dignitaries in the stands led by the heir to the Spanish throne Prince Phillip, honorary president of the centenary year, and nobody expected their team to fail.

There had been ominous precedents though, with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Real Madrid all losing on their hundredth birthdays, and Atlético were missing several key players including first choice keepers Burgos (sick) and Esteban (injured), central defender Coloccini (suspended) and their exciting young striker Fernando Torres (also injured). The much criticised Javi Moreno was called in to lead the attack, and team captain Santi came back in the heart of defence in front of young keeper Juanma.

Only four minutes in to the game their problems deepened, Luis García seeing his upcoming debut with Spain scuppered by an injury. The players appeared to already be affected by a hangover, and the visitors took advantage to take control of the match. Juanma had to tip a shot from Gancedo over the bar and Izquierdo headed Valdo's cross wide when unmarked in front of goal, and two minutes before the break Aguirre's side took the lead, Iván Rosado left with an easy tap-in after Juanma could only get a hand to Manfredini's fierce shot.

The crowd were distraught, and although Albertini hit the outside of the post after a short free kick early in the second half, Aragonés decided to use up his substitutions and bring on Movilla and Aguilera for the Italian midfielder and for José Marí. Sanzol saved well from Javi Moreno soon afterwards, but even when the Pamplona based side were left with ten men after Cruchaga picked up a second booking twenty minutes from the end, Atlético could not find the way to goal.

Many fans didn't stay to watch the giant fireworks display at the end, disappointed that their side had not taken the opportunity to move up to the UEFA spots, and president Jesús Gil was so upset that he said that some of the players from his team did not deserve to live. In fact the only people who left the ground happy were the Osasuna players, who had won for the first time in nine games and who came away with three vital points to their fight for survival.
