A thrilling match at Montjuic, where Espanyol came back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Athletic Bilbao, their second such result in a row. The Basque side raced into the lead in the second minute with a goal from Ezquerro after Toni decided to fist away a long shot from Javi González. Five minutes later the Catalans suffered a serious blow when their captain Tamudo went off with a hamstring injury, but his replacement Milosevic went close to scoring soon after coming on. Bilbao went further in front though when Yeste ran on to Etxeberría's through ball to chip the ball over Toni, and the under 21 international got his second of the night on the half hour mark with a bending free kick from outside of the area.

Despite the whistles of the home supporters, Clemente decided not to make any more changes at the break, and he was revindicated when Maxi sent a looping header over Aranzubia into the net from Domoraud's pass. Four minutes later Milosevic took advantage of a sleepy defence to win the ball off Karanka and beat the keeper, and suddenly it was a different game. Heynckes brought on a fifth defender, but referee López Nieto awarded Espanyol a penalty against Del Horno in a confusing goalmouth incident following a corner. Roger stepped up to slam the ball home to win a point which seemed impossible only half an hour earlier, taking his side three points clear of the drop zone.
