Atlético Madrid were two goals down against Espanyol with only four minutes to play, but they came back to draw 3-3 and save a point. Javier Clemente had put out a defensive line up with five at the back, but his side took the lead midway through the first half when referee Undiano Mallenco ruled that Hibic had fouled Tamudo in the area, the visiting captain scoring from the spot himself. Luis Aragonés lost Fernando Torres to a hamstring injury early on, and his much maligned replacement Javi Moreno tested ex Atlético keeper Toni a couple of times before the break.

With the rain now falling heavily, Espanyol went further ahead when Lopo bundled the ball into the net on the hour mark, Sergi unable to stop it crossing the line, and although Luis Garcia pulled one back soon afterwards, Domoraud restored the two goal cushion with a header from De la Peña's free kick. It looked as if the Catalans were heading for a much needed victory, but Hibic got on the end of a long free kick to beat Toni, and in the last minute Aguilera left the defence standing to meet Stankovic's cross and direct a header wide of the keeper.

As Toni was leaving the pitch at the end he was felled by a water bottle thrown from the crowd, a sad end to an exciting match. Espanyol ended the weekend two points away from the drop zone, but they must be ruing the fact that they threw away two more points in the end.
