Barcelona closed to within three points of the UEFA spots after they thrashed a poor Racing Santander 6-1. Fresh from their win over Newcastle, Antic's side scored with less than a minute on the clock, Kluivert picking up a pass from Riquelme to beat Lemmens, and the Argentine midfielder scored the second himself six minutes later with an individualist effort. For a brief moment the visitors looked like they might come back, and Javi Guerrero had a goal disallowed for a borderline offside. But Barça pushed forward again, and soon after Mora cleared off the line from Kluivert, the Dutch striker juggled Reiziger's pass in the air before volleying a third goal past the Belgian keeper.

Javi Guerrero did pull one back after the break with a great shot from outside of the area, and the striker went close to getting another later on as the Catalans eased off. But with ten minutes to go Saviola cut through the defence and played the ball wide for Overmars to strike a low shot into the net, and three minutes later he got a second, running on to Riquelme's through ball to chip the keeper. Referee Carmona Méndez waved away an appeal for a penalty on Saviola, but not long afterwards the Argentine forward was brought down again and this time Carmona had no hesitation pointing at the spot. Mendieta stepped up to stroke the ball home for Barcelona's biggest win of the season, leaving their opponents down within a place of the relegation spots.
