Sevilla moved ahead of city
rivals Betis, level on points with sixth placed Atlético, after a last
minute 3-2 win over Alavés. With ten points from their last four games,
Joaquín Caparrós stuck to the same line up as the week before,
with Antoñito keeping his place up front. Alavés though had only
picked up one point in the last month, and Mané decided to put out a
more defensive side than usual, with five at the back and only Rubén
Navarro up front. At the beginning the visitors looked the better side, but the
Andalucians took the lead somewhat against the run of play when Torrado laid
the ball across for Casquero to beat Juan Pablo from the edge of the area.
Mané decided to go
back to plan B at the break, bringing on midfielder Pablo for Ochoa in a more
attacking formation. David had to intervene to prevent Jordi Cruyff from
getting in a shot near to goal, and a few minutes later Rubén Navarro
levelled the scores, the first goal that Notario had let in for five matches. A
quarter of an hour later the Basques were in front, Iván Alonso coming
on and almost immediately heading the ball on for Astudillo to score.
Caparrós threw on his
last forward to try and get back in the game, but it was defender Javi Navarro
who made the difference, celebrating his call up for the first time with Spain
by winning a penalty when referee Rubinos Pérez decided he had been
fouled by Astudillo in the area. Reyes converted the kick, and it looked like
that would be all when Machlas broke free in injury time. His shot was blocked
by Juan Pablo, but the unfortunate Karmona could not get out of the way of the
rebound and turned the ball into his own net. It was a bitter blow for the
visiting fans, and leaves Alavés down in the relegation spots for the
first time in many months. |
