Celta took advantage of a Mallorca side who were tired after their midweek cup win, beating them 0-2 to move back above Betis into fifth place. Lotina lined up with a defensive side, new signing Angel making his debut in a defensive midfield role and Edu getting the nod as makeshift centre forward due to the poor recent form of Catanha and McCarthy. The Celta manager's tactics were to close down Ibagaza and Novo in midfield, and as a result Eto'o and Pandiani found their supply lines cut off up front.

With the threat snuffed out, the visitors turned to the attack, and they came close to opening the scoring, first when Leo Franco saved from an Angel header and then when Cáceres headed against the woodwork. It was a matter of time before they scored, and they got the goal they were looking for when Edu got on the end of Gustavo López's cross to head wide of Leo Franco ten minutes after the break. Soon afterwards the Brazilian youngster added a second with a superb shot from outside of the area, and he even could have completed his hat-trick later on.

Manzano brought on Turu Flores to join the front two, but his side's only reply was a close range effort from Lussenhoff which was well saved by Pinto, who had replaced Cavallero at half time after the first choice keeper had complained of dizziness, possibly from a bout of flu. The defeat means Mallorca drop further down the table, and they ended the weekend in eleventh position.
