Rayo Vallecano's Fernando
Vázquez lost his job after his side suffered their third home defeat in
a row, losing 0-1 to Valladolid. The manager had survived by the skin of his
teeth a month ago after a string of bad results, but this time lady president
Teresa Rivero didn't hesitate, and the day following the game she announced
that he had been fired, with Oscar Ruggeri and Gustavo Benítez
favourites to take over.
Vázquez made five
changes to his side in an attempt to stop the rot, including the position of
goalkeeper where Segura came in for his first game of the season in place of
Imanol Etxeberría. It didn't make much difference though, as a
Valladolid side looking to recover from their midweek cup defeat bounced back
to take the lead in the ninth minute, Fernando Vázquez winning the ball
down the left wing and crossing in for Oscar González to beat the keeper
with a well placed header.
After that Rayo did their
best, with Bolic and Michel going close before the break, and Bolic failing to
finish off after an incredible run by Michel in the second half. Michel got the
ball in the net only to see it ruled out for a previous foul, and
Peragón was booked for diving when he went down in the area. In the end
though the points went to the visitors, who move up to ninth place in the
table. Vázquez paid the price of failure, his now former side now
languishing in eighteenth place and heading downwards. |
