Celta Vigo were suffering
from a UEFA cup hangover after their defeat at the hands of Celtic midweek, and
they were beaten 3-0 by Racing Santander to drop out of the top four. Lotina
put out a more defensive starting line up which for the first time did not
include any Spanish players, with three anchormen in midfield and Coudet and
Edu supporting Catanha up front. The Hispano-Brazilian striker was not having
one of his best days though, and he failed to control the ball in front of goal
when unmarked early in the first half. Most of the play though was at the other
end, where keeper Cavallero had to be at his best to keep out Javi Guerrero,
Munitis and company.
The turning point of the
game though came thirteen minutes in to the second half, when Preciado made a
double substitution, bringing on Bodipo and Benayoun for Pablo Sierra and
Guerrero. Within a minute Bodipo headed Regueiro's free kick on for
Moratón to head the first goal in from close range, and a minute later
it was Bodipo again who won the ball off Cavallero after he mis-kicked a
Méndez back pass to set up Benayoun for the second. Things got worse for
Lotina when Méndez had to be carried off with a serious knee injury, and
five minutes later Benayoun added a third goal with a chip over the keeper from
the edge of the area to take Racing away from the danger zone and up to
eleventh place. |
