It was draws all round on
Saturday night's three games, as Sevilla and Deportivo La Coruña also
shared the points between them. The Gallicians had not lost in the
Sánchez Pizjuan stadiun in the last five years, but they came in to this
game once again with a makeshift defence, with Scaloni joining the list of
absentees after a long and fruitless trip to Japan to join the Argentine squad
but then to spend the whole 90 minutes on the bench. César had at least
recovered though, and Víctor and Luque came in for Amavisca and
Tristán, who once again was in the news after being accused, falsely as
it turned out, of being seen making a disturbance late at night after Spain's
midweek game in his native Andalucia.
Caparrós was missing
Reyes, suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card the week before, and
Samways had still not recovered from an injury which has kept him out for the
last couple of games. With a difficult calendar coming up they needed a win
here, and they got off to the best possible start when Antoñito
deflected a Casquero free kick in the fourth minute, catching Juanmi
wrong-footed. Makaay had a chance to level the scores when he shot wide a few
minutes later, but Sevilla should have wrapped up the game late in the first
half, with Juanmi saving from Fredi and Antoñito and Fredi both missing
the target when free in front of goal.
Let off the hook, Depor
didn't waste any time in coming back, and three minutes in to the second half
Sergio lost his marker and swung the ball into the goalmouth for Makaay to
stick out a foot and poke the ball in to the net off the near post. It was the
Dutch striker's fifteenth in all competitions and his eighth in the league
making him the top scorer at the moment. After that the visitors recovered
their form, and after Notario blocked a shot from Makaay at point blank range,
Tristán came on to test the keeper with another strike from right of
goal. Depor go into Tuesday night's Champions League tie with Juventus knowing
their strike force is on top form .Sevilla take another point in their fight
for survival. |
