A hat-trick from Walter Pandiani gave Mallorca a 1-3 victory at Valladolid to take them up to third place in the league. The Uruguayan striker had not got his name on the scoresheet since moving on loan from Deportivo La Coruña in the summer. However he made up for it with a vengeance as his side came from behind to win their fifth game in a row, equalling a club record set by Luis Aragonés three years ago.

It was the home side who started the better though, going close through Aganzo early on and taking the lead midway through the first half after a mix up between Olaizola and Leo Franco let in Marcos to score. Pandiani headed an equaliser a minute later from Novo's cross, but Leo Franco had to make two good saves from Aganzo before half time to keep the scores level at the break.

It was a different story in the second half though, with Mallorca dominating the play after a brief spell of activity by the home side in which Nico Olivera headed wide. A few minutes later Pandiani put the visitors ahead, Novo finding him with a short pass after his first shot was blocked by keeper Bizzarri, and then soon afterwards a long gallop down the right wing by Cortés ended in a cross which Pandiani gleefully headed past the keeper for his third of the night.

The 'rifle' could even had made it four had not Bizzarri made a fingertip save onto the post, and the keeper also saved an effort from Eto'o near the end. Manzano brought on veteran full back Miguel Soler for the last twenty minutes, 'El Nano' making his first appearance of the season and thereby setting a new record of twenty seasons playing in the first division. It was a night for records, and Mallorca are flying high after such a bad start to the season. Things can change quickly in football.
