Atlético Madrid recorded their first home win of the season, beating neighbours Rayo Vallecano in this local derby game. Luis Aragonés was looking for a record 320th win as a manager, but with injuries in particular to his defence he was forced to put out a changed line up. Albertini returned in midfield though, and his clever free kick from the right wing in the fourth minute set up Atlético's first goal, the Italian international laying the ball back to the edge of the area where García Calvo fired in a low shot wide of Etxeberría.

Rayo fought their way back as the home side relaxed, and Burgos was forced to make an important save from Bolo following a free kick. But soon afterwards the visitors were left with ten men, Graff earning himself a second yellow card for a hard tackle on Correa with only half an hour gone.

Aragonés was not happy though, and substituted Luis García with Jorge at the break. Fernando Vázquez had already brought on left back Dorado just before half time to cover for Graff, and the two new boys were to clash ten minutes in to the second half, referee Daudén Ibáñez deciding that Dorado's tackle was illegal and awarding a penalty kick which Fernando Torres converted.

After that Atlético were home and dry, and the Rayo players argued amongst themselves as their frustrations grew. Aragonés got his record, moving ahead of Miguel Muñoz, and his side move up to the top half of the table. Rayo, who were level with their opponents in the morning, stay in thirteenth spot, but they are now only a point above the drop zone with a difficult set of games coming up, starting with another local derby against Real Madrid next weekend. By Christmas they could be facing an uphill struggle.
