Celta dropped a place to
third after a dull 0-0 draw with Atlético Madrid. The Gallicians were
missing the injured Catanha, Gustavo López and Sergio and the suspended
McCarthy, and Lotina brought in Edu at centre forward, whilst Luis
Aragonés made several changes to his line up, bringing in José
Mari and Javi Moreno to join Fernando Torres in attack.
The game got off to a slow
start, although Edu did manage to get the ball into the net with a looping
header. Referee López Nieto correctly ruled it out for offside though,
and Edu had to be attended by the trainer after clashing with Burgos in the
play. The Brazilian youngster recovered quickly though, but Mostovoi came away
limping and had to be replaced by Jesuli, doctors diagnosing a hamstring injury
to the Russian star which will keep him out for a couple of weeks or so.
Without their captain there
was nobody to take the initiative, and much of the play was fought out in the
centre of the park. Aragonés had to make two changes at the break, with
Otero and Javi Morteno both complaining of injuries, but the introduction of
Aguilera, Correa, and soon afterwards Movilla made little difference. Fernando
Torres did show some of his future potential with a good run and shot, and
Jesuli had a go at the other end. But in the end the Argentine keepers
Cavallero and Burgos didn't have much to do, and both had to settle for a
point. It was Atlético's fifth of the season in seven games, and they
ended the day down in the bottom half of the table. |
