Atlético Madrid
recorded their first win since their return to the top flight, and they did it
in style with a 0-4 victory against a poor Mallorca. After two defeats in a row
Gregorio Manzano left out Olaizola and Marcos to try and shore up the defence,
but they still found themselves behind early on when Poli brought down Contra
on the edge of the area after Nadal gave the ball away, Fernando Torres
converting the resulting penalty.
With his defence at sixes
and sevens, Mallorca's Leo Franco was left to stop the Atlético attacks
by himself, and the young keeper saved efforts from Correa and Contra. At the
other end Esteban was making his debut thanks to an injury to first choice
keeper Mono Burgos, and he too produced some fine saves, in particular from
Ibagaza. However the best chance fell to Pandiani, who somehow shot over the
bar from a yard out.
With the game approaching
half time Leo Franco made another important save from Fernando Torres, turning
his shot away for a corner. However Correa made himself space as the ball was
played in and scored Atlético's second. Fernando Torres added a third
after the restart, running on to an excellent through ball from Albertini, and
new signing Jorge came on to fire a fourth goal within three minutes of making
his debut, which had been delayed due to financial problems at his old club Las
Palmas.
Mallorca were in disarray,
and Manzano upset the crowd when he replaced Ibagaza near the end. Leo Franco
denied Torres his hat-trick in the dying minutes, but Luis Aragonés
didn't mind this time, the manager having made a satisfactory return to the
ground where he had so much success two seasons ago. He was applauded by the
crowd, which is more than can be said for his opposite number. Manzano's team
are now bottom of the table, and the pressure is already on. |
