Villarreal appeared to have
laid the ghost of their Intertoto final defeat at the hands of Málaga
when they raced into a two goal lead against Osasuna in the first quarter of an
hour of the game. Víctor had protested after being left out of the
starting line up for the second leg of the final, but he came back in to score
both goals with well placed headers, both from an unmarked position in front of
a shaky defence.
Osasuna's new boss, Mexico's
World Cup manager Javier Aguirre, decided to make changes early in the second
half, and it paid off. On came Rivero and new signing Pablo García, and
García in particular was to be the revelation. The Uruguayan midfielder
broke through on the right to set up Antonio López for him to strike
home the first, and then scored the second himself from a free kick which took
a defelction off a defender to salvage a point for his side. |
