UD Almería
joined Terrassa, Compostela and Getafe in the second division after qualifying
on the last day of the playoffs. The team which was only formed from the merger
of two clubs last season beat Pontevedra 1-2 on Saturday evening to stay
ahead of Real Madrid B at the top of group D. With a better head to head goal
average than the team from Madrid, the East coasters only needed a point to
clinch promotion, and rumours that their rivals had offered cash incentives to
the Gallicians seemed to be unfounded as the locals lined up with a team packed
with reserve players. Within three minutes the visitors were ahead, Olivares
heading a cross from the right past the stranded Ragg. Pontevedra equalised
just before the break however when Curiel ran through and shot under Barbero,
but Francisco restored the lead soon after the restart after a mistake by the
defence.
Real Madrid B won
their game at Espanyol B 0-3 to keep up the pressure on Almería,
but it was a pyrrhic victory in the end. Nothing but a win would do for
López Caro's side against a team who had not picked up a single point in
the playoffs and who were only playing for pride. It took the visitors almost
all the first half to make the breakthrough though, and it came when Luis
García turned in a cross from Nuñez on the stroke of half time.
News that Pontevedra had equalised spurred them on, and Nuñez, with
Raúl's number 7 on his back, scored twice after the break, the second
soon after Espanyol's César Navas was sent off. But in the end 13 points
were not enough, and they ended up two short of the Gallician side. Failure to
win promotion may mean that many of the Real Madrid youngsters move on, with
one or two destined to join the first team squad and others to be loaned out to
first or second division sides. The end of an era.
For the second year in a
row, non of the four teams who won their regional divisions gained promotion.
Real Madrid B, Barcelona B, Barakaldo and Motril all failed, proving once again
that the second division B is the hardest of the lot to get out of. Barcelona B
did not even come second in their group, Valencia B getting ahead of
them on head to head goal average after beating Mérida 2-0.
Jandro opened the scoring in the second minute and added a second goal on the
half hour mark to wrap up the three points. They now wait to see if group B
winners Compostela can meet their back debts, and if not it will be Valencia B
who go up in their place. The Barça B team is another they may lose some
of their young stars to other teams this summer.
Celebrations at the Alfonso
Pérez Coliseum in Getafe, where 4,000 fans celebrated the
promotion of their side as champions of group C. However the match itself
against Motril was disappointing, with the game ending without goals
despite the best efforts of the Madrid based team. Both sides ended with ten
men after Huegun was shown a straight red for the visitors and Mora picked up
two yellow cards for the locals in the second half.
Barakaldo ended the
season with a 1-0 victory against Hércules in their last group A
game. Both sides used the occasion to try out players, and the only goal came
from Sendoa soon after the half time interval. The Basque side ended the
playoffs in second place, albeit well behind Terrassa.
Hospitalet and
Cultural Leonesa decided to bring forward their group C game to Thursday
night so that the players could start their holidays a couple of days earlier.
The Catalans took the lead midway through the first half with a Javi
García penalty after Bermejo was brought down in the area, but the
visitors equalised before half time through Nacho. Bartrés restored the
lead just after the break, and José added a third later on to take the
locals off bottom spot.
Barcelona B beat
group B winners Compostela in their last match on Friday evening to move
temporarily up to second place in their league. Watched by returning first team
manager Louis Van Gaal, the Barcelona players were eager to impress, and they
took the lead midway through the first half when Trashorras took a return pass
from Babangida to beat keeper Yiyi. Cabarcos headed the visitors back into the
game later in the half, but second half strikes by Carrión and young
substitute Perona gave the locals the victory. Compostela now have a month to
pay their outstanding debts to their players and confirm their promotion. If
they fail, the team finishing second in the group will go up in their place.
A large crowd in the Estadi
Olimpic at Terrassa celebrated the locals' return to the second division
A. By coincidence it was a local festival on the same day, and the Sunday game
was preceded by groups of "Castillers" building human pyramids, a local pastime
in Cataluña. However their match against Ceuta was less
interesting than the other activities, with the visitors determined not to be
humiliated again after letting in four goals against their rivals a week ago.
In the end though Terrassa did get a 1-0 victory with a headed goal three
minutes from time by Keko, setting up a new playoff record of six wins out of
six. |
