Atlético
Madrid extended their lead at the top of the second division to five points
with a 0-2 win at Córdoba, their fourth victory in a row.
Aguilera gave them the lead in the sixth minute, taking a pass from Stankovic
to race round the defence and shoot across the keeper, and Diego Alonso added
the second after the break from Dani's pass. Córdoba put up a good fight
in the first half, with Whelliton missing a couple of good chances, but their
resistance ended when Velasco was sent off twenty minutes from the end for a
second bookable offence. Alonso heads the second division goalscorers' chart
with his seventh goal of the season.
The second division's two
revelation teams Racing Ferrol and Xerez cancelled each other out
with a 2-2 draw in Gallicia. The visitors raced into a two goal lead with
strikes from Pineda and (from a free kick) in a three minute period in the
first half. However Ferrol came back with two headed goals from French central
defender Burle after the break to end the weekend in sixth place with a game in
hand. Xerez played the last 15 minutes with ten men after German defender
Kutschera was sent off.
Xerez stay in second place
two points ahead of a depleted Oviedo side who lost their second game in
a row, this time 1-0 to bottom club Badajoz. The only goal came from
Pepín in the second half, giving new manager Carlos Alhinho his first
victory and taking his side two places up the table above Nástic and
Poli Ejido. Oviedo were injured missing strikers Oli and Losada, and with
Onopko suspended they were forced to field a side packed with youngsters.
Recreativo Huelva
salvaged a point in the dying minutes against Racing Santander, a last
minute penalty giving them a 1-1 draw. Juanma headed the visitors into the lead
from a Julio Alvarez corner with a quarter of an hour to go, but Mora handled
in the area in the 89th minute, getting himself sent off for a second bookable
offence. Oscar converted the spot kick just as Racing were on the verge of
their first away win in 18 months. Recreativo drop to fifth and Racing are now
fourteenth, having picked up eight points in their last four matches under
caretaker manager Quique Setién
After a dull 90 minutes, an
injury time goal from Dani Pendín gave Burgos a 0-1 win at
Salamanca, their first victory in six weeks. They move back up over
Recreativo into fourth place, behind Oviedo on goal average. Salamanca have not
won now in five games, and they drop to twelfth.
Albacete closed back
up on the leaders with a 2-1 win over Poli Ejido. The home side took a
two goal lead in the first half, with Toril scoring the first from a free kick
which took a deflection off a defender and Pereda scrambling the second.
However with new manager Castro Santos in charge for the first time, the
visitors came back with a headed goal by Sergio Cruz, and they were unlucky not
to save a point in the end as the home side relaxed.
Albacete move above
Eibar, whose good run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at
Leganés. The only goal came five minutes from the end through
Oscar Fernández, taking the Madrid based side away from the drop zone
and saving the skin of manager Ciriaco Cano, for the time being at least.
Elche and Murcia
are level on points with Leganés, Salamanca and Santander in the
bottom half of the table after they drew 1-1. Nino gave the home side the lead
with an individualist goal in the first half (his sixth of the season), with
Loreto heading the equaliser after the half time interval after Monteagudo
mis-hit his shot.
Levante's new manager
Pepe Balaguer failed to turn things around, losing 0-1 at home to
Jaén in his first home match in charge. The Valencia side were
the better team for most of the game, but Javi Peña in particular missed
a couple of chances in the second half, and Pepelu gave the visitors the
victory from the penalty spot after Setvalls brought down Sierra with a quarter
of an hour to go. This was Jaén's third win in a row, and they rise up
the table to eighth.
Sporting Gijon and
Extremadura drew 1-1, a result which doesn't benefit either team. The
Asturian side had a goal by David Pirri disallowed early on, but went ahead on
the half hour mark when Villa finished off a pass from Lozano. However the
referee awarded a controversial penalty a few minutes later, possibly for a
foul by Aira on Manuel, and Moreno made it all square with the spot kick.
In the other match played on
Saturday evening, Numancia and Gimnastic Tarragona played out a
goal-less draw in the Pajaritos stadium. The home side were looking for their
second victory in a row for the first time in three years, but although they
hit the post through Ojeda in the first half and dominated the game, they were
unable to beat an inspired Moso. |
