Bottom club Tenerife have a foot and a half in the second division after losing 1-5 to Valladolid. With virtually nothing to play for the Castillia-León side were not expected to put up much of a fight, and manager Javier Clemente was hopeful, having some of his key players back in the side. He also it appears had a secret weapon, fleas, which the Valladolid players found in their dressing room causing them to find another place to get ready for the game. However the Canary Islanders were on the back foot right from the start, and within a quarter of an hour they were behind when a static defence let through Fernando Sales for him to shoot under Julio Iglesias. The Tenerife defence did tighten up a bit after that, with Lussenhoff blocking an effort from Tote and Javi Venta clearing from under the feet of Luis García, but the ex Tenerife player made it two when he stroked a loose ball into the net after Fernando Sales and Julio Iglesias crashed into each other.

The second half started with headers from Marioni and Alexis at goal, but Valladolid continued to dominate and only a double save from Iglesias kept out Tote. Luis García scored his second of the night though to put the result out of doubt, and the crowd applauded him as he left the field a minute later, appreciative if nothing else of the help he had given them the season before when they gained promotion. A minute later Marioni got a goal back in a quick attacking move, but the introduction of Chema for the last five minutes for the visitors had an immediately effect, the midfielder setting up Fernando Sales for an easy fourth goal and then completing the rout himself with a shot from the left. The result gives Valladolid an outside chance of the last UEFA cup spot, and leaves Tenerife four points away from safety having lost five of their last six games. Clemente's miracle looks like it is not going to come off, and they could be down if they do not win next week in the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria against Las Palmas. After the game fans attacked the players' cars, and there were ugly incidents when Lussenhoff and Marioni both had confrontations with supporters.
