Sevilla assured their presence in the top flight for next season and at the same time put in a late bid for the last UEFA spot by beating the team currently occupying the seventh position, Alavés. There was no love lost between the two sides after the game earlier in the season in Vitoria, when hard tackling from the Basque team and time wasting by the Andalucians caused mutual criticisms. One of the worst offenders from that match Coloccini was missing this time from Mané's side through injury, but Téllez was there, and he was lucky not to be sent off again when he and Pablo took out the hero of the night, Víctor Salas, as he was looking for his hat-trick. Pablo was not so fortunate though, and he drew the short straw this time as referee Puentes Leira showed him the red card after consulting with his linesman.

The game didn't really warm up until the half hour mark, when Casquero saw a first shot saved by Herrera and then fired a free kick against the bar. Alavés were not showing the resolve of previous games, and Sevilla took the lead just before half time when Víctor Salas turned in a corner from Tomás past the keeper. Mané brought on Rubén Navarro to join Iván Alonso at the interval, but the visitors still didn't manage a shot on goal and Víctor put the home side further in front when he ran on to a lifted pass by Toedtli to hold off Téllez and shoot low past Herrera. Téllez did finally test Notario with a long free kick, but otherwise the keeper was untroubled, and Tomás went close to making it three with a shot from the left which the keeper saved near the end. Alavés still hold on to that last UEFA spot for now, but with five teams within four points of them, including Sevilla, any one of them could oust them from their berth.
