Rayo Vallecano moved out of
the relegation spots with their first away victory of the season, a 0-2 win at
Las Palmas. It was a hard fought game, with both sides desperately needing
points to avoid relegation, and chances were created by both sides in a frantic
first half. The Madrid based side had two goals disallowed in the first half
from Peragón and then Bolic, but unlike previous weeks where bad
refereeing decisions had cost them the match, this time Pérez Lasa and
his linesmen were spot on. At the other end Etxeberria kept them in the game
with saves from a Jorge header and a deflected shot from an active Orlando
which the stranded keeper did well to push over the bar.
If anything the home side
started to get on top, Samways sending a long drive just over the bar and
Etxeberria making a couple more good saves from Orlando. Las Palmas defender
Alvaro had to leave the field semi-conscious after breaking his nose in a clash
of heads, and the game appeared to be petering out to a draw when Manzano
brought on Bolo a minute before time. However the Bilbao born striker made the
difference, heading on a corner for Corino to hook the loose ball into the net,
and then winning an injury time penalty after Sarasúa pushed him over
for Peragón to smash home the spot kick. Rayo move a point ahead of
their rivals into fourteenth spot, and even though they are still only two
points above the drop zone they can start to think of survival at last. .
