Las Palmas and Zaragoza
cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw in a tense match in the Canary
Islands. Both sides needed a victory to move them away from the relegation
spots, with Zaragoza lying next to bottom and Las Palmas three points above
them in sixteenth place. The game began with a minute's silence for the victims
of the floods in Tenerife, and possibly for the first time ever the home fans
remained respectfully quiet as the name of their arch rivals appeared on the
scoreboard. That was soon forgotten however when Juanele got to work, the ex
Tenerife veteran having an excellent game but provoking the crowd at every
moment he could. Marcos Alonso had given him a wide role together with Galletti
on the other wing, and with Komljenovic fitting in well into his new role in
front of the back four the visitors were the better side in the opening
minutes. However Milosevic was not at his best, and failed to covert the
chances that his colleagues created.
Fernando Vázquez made
his first change with only half an hour gone, putting on Jaime Quesada for a
rare appearance in place of an overaggressive Jayo and bringing Josico back
alongside Samways. Quesada's commanding presence put some order back in their
play, and they gradually snuffed out the threat from their opponents. The loss
of Toro Acuña at the break was a further blow to Alonso's side, and they
fell behind from a penalty five minutes after the restart when Jorge fell
rather too easily as Lainez went down for the ball, referee Esquinas Torres
pointing at the spot for Jorge to convert the kick himself. Las Palmas came out
looking to finish off their rivals, but they were caught out when Milosevic
chested the ball back for Juanele to volley an equaliser past young keeper
Orlando Quintana, the forward getting himself booked in the process for holding
his hands up to his ears in celebration. In the dying minutes Las Palmas had a
chance to take the three points when Esquinas Torres awarded a second penalty
after Rebosio brought down Edu Alonso from behind, but this time Lainez dived
to save the kick from Olías. It meant a point each, keeping both more or
less where they were at the start of the day. |
