The score of the day was at the San Mames stadium, where Celta beat the hosts Athletic Bilbao by an incredible 1-6. Both teams started the day level on 48 points in the UEFA cup spots, but there was a world of difference between the two once the goals started going in. The first chance though fell to the home side, with Cavallero saving from Ezquerro in the first minute. However Catanha headed the visitors into the lead on the quarter hour mark, his sixteenth of the season in the league, taking him level with Morientes at the top of the Pichichi chart. Three minutes later Vagner got a second with a spectacular shot which left Lafuente clutching at air, and Celta were on their way. However Mostovoi missed a chance to increase the lead, and Urzaiz pulled one back five minutes before the break following up after Cavallero failed to hold on to a free kick. The Celta fans got a little nervous, remembering that the Basque side had turned over a two goal lead earlier in the season to beat them 2-3, and Tiko, celebrating his call up for the Spanish side, almost levelled the scores with a shot from outside of the area before the referee blew for half time.

Heynckes brought on Javi González for Aitor Ocio at the break, but it made little difference. Luccin scored Celta's third with a shot from way outside of the area, his first goal for his new club. That opened the floodgates, and Karpin added another with a back-header from Mostovoi's long free kick. Jesuli had replaced the injured Gustavo López early in the game and he made it five, dribbling through a totally shambolic Bilbao defence, and another substitute Maurice completed the "set" after Jesuli's shot was blocked. The few fans left in the ground at the end gave the Celta players a standing ovation, and booed off their own players. This was only Celta's second win in the San Mames stadium in their history, and their largest away victory in 34 years. It was also their third win in a row, and they move up to the fourth Champions League spot, above Betis on goal average, leaving the Lions licking their wounds down in seventh place.
