Málaga rise up three places after beating local rivals Sevilla 0-2 in a match which was preceded by crowd trouble, with stones being thrown through the window of a supporters' coach. Darío Silva returned to an otherwise unchanged Málaga side after almost a month out through injury, with Moisés coming back in for the hosts to join strike partner Reyes. Sevilla were looking for a victory after losing their last two games in a row, and they were the better side in the first half. However Contreras in the Málaga goal demonstrated why many people are tipping him for a call up for the national side, making several first class saves including one from Moisés as early as the first minute. The first half came to a close with the home fans calling for the sending off of Litos after he brought down Reyes from behind, but referee Ansuategui Roca let him off a second yellow card.

Contreras continued his one man display after the break, and after he stopped an effort from Moisés the play switched to the other end, where Dely Valdés opened the scoring after Notario failed to hold on to a shot from Darío Siva. Moisés did get the ball in the net a few minutes later but it was correctly ruled out for offside, but then his brother Gerardo, playing for the other side, landed a corner on the head of Dely Valdés for him to score his second of the night. It gave Málaga their first victory at the home of their neighbours in thirty years, and takes them to within a point of eighth place Alavés, still in line for a place in Europe even if only by the back door competition, the Intertoto cup. Sevilla are now three points behind them, and have to pick themselves up for their next game, the local derby with Betis.
