Mallorca climbed out of the relegation zone with an invaluable 0-2 victory over direct rivals Rayo Vallecano. Having only taken one point from their last five games they were not given much of a chance against Manzano's improving side, who had not lost at home since late November. Kresic went back though to the five man defence that had brought him good results earlier in the season, and the extra man at the back gave them the security they were lacking in the last few games. Rayo did get the ball in the net early on, but referee Rodríguez Santiago correctly ruled out Ferrón's strike for offside. A few minutes later a defensive error by Rayo let in Ibagaza, and he played the ball on to Luque for him to set up Eto'o for the easiest of opening goals. With one in the bag the visitors sat back, but they came close to adding to their tally in the second half when Luque shot wide in front of goal on a rapid breakaway.

Manzano brought on Glaucio when Mainz had to go off with blood streaming down his face, and the Brazilian revitalised his side. The referee upset the crowd turning down two penalty appeals in quick succession for fouls by Nadal on Peragón and then Bolic, who was only playing as his red card from last week was suspended by the appeal committee. But with Rayo in full frontal assault on Roa's goal Mallorca scored again, substitute Paunovic finishing off another quick counterattack after Eto'o put him through. It was enough to give the islanders their first ever win at Vallecas in their eighteenth visit to the ground, and they climb two points over their opponents and just above Las Palmas, equal on goal difference but having scored three more goals in favour.
