Alavés fell to their
second defeat in four days, losing 0-4 to a surprisingly good Mallorca who have
now scored seven in their last two games. The inspiration for the visitors came
from their recent signing from Oviedo "Chino" Losada, who was making his first
start for his new club in place of Paunovic, who together with Novo was serving
out a one match ban. With Eto'o away on international duty with Cameroon,
Losada stepped in to his shoes to combine perfectly with exciting young striker
Luque, and between them they scored three goals in the first hour of the game.
Losada opened the scoring himself in the fifth minute, running on to a long
clearance out of defence and catching Kike off his line with a first touch high
lob from the edge of the area. And only a few minutes later he laid the ball
across for Luque to score for the fifth league game in a row, equalling the
club record.
The Vitoria based side were
reeling, two goals down despite having most of the play up to then. Mané
had brought in his Dutch duo of Witschge and Jordi Cruyff, and the former went
close with a free kick from the edge of the area. Soon after half time Roa
saved from Geli, but then the visitors went further ahead when Losada latched
on to a short free kick from Cristian Díaz to fire a shot across Kike
and in to the far corner of the net. Mané brought on two new forwards
without much effect, and when referee Muñiz Fernández awarded a
penalty to the visitors after Geli tripped Carlos, the fans started to leave in
droves. Campano converted the kick to give Alavés their worst ever home
defeat in the first division, and take the Balearic island side four points
clear of the drop zone. Alavés drop from second to fifth, albeit still
only a point behind second placed Celta. |
