The first ever Canary Island
derby in the first division ended with an away victory for Las Palmas, who
defeated Tenerife 1-3. It was a fitting way for the team from Gran Canaria to
celebrate their one thousandth game in the first division, although manager
Fernando Vázquez had to watch from the stands as he was serving out a
one match suspension. His work was done however, and his team selection proved
spot on, in particular the inclusion of Tevenet for Orlando, who missed the
game through illness. Tevenet had already scored in both matches two years ago
when the teams met in the second division, and he was to prove a nightmare for
Pepe Mel's team, scoring in the opening minutes from Josico's pass and hitting
the post twice with free kicks in the first half.
A power cut in Santa Cruz
due to a lightening storm stopped the game for almost half an hour, and when
the lights came back on Las Palmas keeper Nacho González tipped a fierce
Marioni free kick against the bar. The bad news for the locals though was the
loss of Pablo Paz to a ligament injury which may keep him out for the rest of
the season. Shortly after the restart Lussenhoff levelled the scores turning in
Marioni's free kick, but their joy only lasted two minutes before Josico
restored the lead with a glancing header from a Samways free kick. And a few
minutes later Nacho González finished things off with a goal from the
penalty spot after Lussenhoff brought down Tevenet. Unfortunately some of the
more idiotic rival fans spoilt the night when they clashed outside the ground
after the game, but most were well behaved and the visitors went home knowing
that their team was safe for now in midtable whereas their opponents are
struggling in next to bottom spot. Tenerife have only scored twelve goals in
eighteen games, but with no money in the bank they are unlikely to strengthen
their squad this winter. Things are looking bleak. |
