A big build up for the first derby match in the first division for two years between high flying Sevilla and Betis, but in the end the two sides cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw. It was a typical hard fought game, with niggling fouls and tempers raised throughout and few goal chances. The only opportunities came in the first half, with Notario saving a Luis Fernández free kick and Capi shooting wide for the visitors, and Luis Gil bringing a good save out of Prats at the other end. Betis were missing the inspiration of Brazilian international Denilson, called up by his country, and one from each side, Gallardo and Varela respectively, were away playing for the Spanish under 21 side. The shared point means that Betis drop out of the European spots to seventh, a point and a place above their opponents. The game was marred by crowd trouble, and a stone was thrown through a window of the Betis coach before the match.
