Real Madrid's comeback was
cut short by Zaragoza, who beat them 2-1 with an injury time Toro Acuña
goal. Acuña had only just stepped off a plane after returning from
Paraguay, and went back immediately after the match to play for his country
again midweek, but he had time to score one of the goals of the day with a high
shot from almost 40 yards out which sailed over the head of Casillas in to the
net. . Yordi gave the home side the lead after a period of pressure in the
first half with another spectacular goal, getting behind young defender
Pavón to volley the ball home. However Raúl cancelled it out with
a second half strike, touching in Geremi's shot for his eleventh all time goal
against Zaragoza and his fifth in consecutive seasons at the Romareda stadium.
Madrid came out looking for
the winner, and Del Bosque made three changes early in the second half. Solari
in particular created chances and was unlucky to have a penalty appeal turned
down, but without the injured Roberto Carlos, and with Zidane and Makelele on
international duty with France, they were unable to find the final pass they
needed. Then Acuña struck to give Zaragoza their first home win against
Madrid in seven years, taking them a point above their rivals in to the top
half of the table. Madrid themselves are eleventh, equalling the 1942/3 season
for their worst ever position at this stage of the competition.
