Barcelona restored some
pride after losing to Real Madrid and getting knocked out of the cup, beating
Valladolid by a flattering 4-0. A much changed team came out at the Nou Camp to
a chorus of boos and whistles, with the smallest crowd of the season turning
out after their recent disappointments. With several players on international
duty and others injured, Rexach was forced to include Kluivert, De Boer and
Gabri in the starting line up, all three of whom had played for their country
only 24 hours earlier. They took a comfortable lead though with two goals in a
minute, Saviola getting the first after Overmars put him through and Puyol
getting a second from Saviola's return pass, driving the ball past Ricardo who
was celebrating his first call up for the Spanish national side.
Valladolid came back later
in the half, and Bonano was forced to save twice from Ricchetti and Luis
García. Eusebio and Fernando Sales came on at half time, and Sales broke
through twice almost immediately, the first effort going wide and the second
saved by the on-form Barça keeper. The home fans breathed a sigh of
relief though when Saviola won himself a penalty and Kluivert converted, and
after a much applauded Eusebio hit the bar with a free kick, Saviola hit the
fourth from Rochemback's cross. In the last minute referee Pérez Lasa
awarded a penalty to the visitors after Puyol pushed over Oscar, but for the
second time this season Tote missed, his shot hitting the foot of the post and
bouncing out. Barcelona move two places up the table to second, now only a
point behind leaders Deportivo. |
