Villarreal finally ended
their run of six games without a win, beating Las Palmas 2-0 in the Madrigal
stadium. Víctor Muñoz kept faith with the same starting line up
and his players paid back his trust with a good performance, lead by an on-form
Jorge López. Arruabarrena opened the scoring heading home
Víctor's corner and Palermo could have added a second, shooting just
wide twice and having a penalty claim turned down when substitute Ramón
brought him down in the area.
The big striker set up Jorge
López for the second goal early in the second half with a skillful
overhead pass and Villarreal were home and dry. Las Palmas had only managed one
effort at goal in the first hour, a header from Schurrer, and it was only when
Fernando Vázquez brought on two more forwards near the end that they
finally got close to López Vallejo's goal. This was the fifth defeat in
a row away from home for the Canary Islanders, and the first time they had lost
by more than one goal all season. They drop to fourteenth, only a point above
Tenerife in the first relegation spot. |
