Espanyol put their problems behind them, for the time being at least, with a 2-0 victory over Tenerife in the Montjuic stadium. The Catalan's manager Paco Flores was given a vote of confidence by his local players midweek after the board threatened to sack him, although Benítez resigned the club captaincy afterwards as talks took place without his knowledge. Flores left Mexican international Palencia on the bench and brought in Munteanu in a more balanced side, and it paid it's dividends quickly when Posse opened the scoring after Rotchen headed on Morales's centre. Morales put through his new captain Tamudo a few minutes later for him to add a second, and the fans began to celebrate.

Tenerife manager Pepe Mel had to replace his keeper Julio Iglesias in the eleventh minute after he slipped and strained his groin taking a goal kick, and clearly unhappy with his side he made his next substitution before half time, bringing on Hugo Morales. For a time they came back, and Xisco got the ball into the net only to see it ruled out by referee Losantos Omar. But that was about it, and Espanyol went on to keep their second clean sheet of the season to move up from sixteenth to eighth place in the table. Tenerife drop down to seventeenth, but with many teams close together there is no cause for concern at the moment.
