Rayo Vallecano dropped to
the bottom of the first division for the first time in seven years after losing
to relegation rivals Tenerife. Gregorio Manzano's side let in the fastest goal
of the season in their last game, and once again they went to sleep in the
opening minutes, Iván Ania beating Lopetgui for his side's first goal in
four matches. This itme though Rayo reacted quickly, and Corino levelled the
scores five minutes later heading home Michel's free kick. The rest of the
first half belonged to the visitors as shots rained down on Tenerife's goal,
with Michel hitting the bar with a centre-come-shot and Lussenhoff clearing
Bolic's effort in front of the goalmouth with the keeper beaten.
Shortly before half time
Julio Iglesias somehow kept out another effort from Michel and the home fans
booed their team off at the break. However the second half was a different
story, and two goals in three minutes from Jaime and Xisco took the wind out of
Rayo's sails (incidentally all four goalscorers got their names on the
scoresheets for the first time for their new clubs). Tenerife climb away from
the bottom spots, for the time being at least, leaving Manzano pondering how he
is going to get Rayo out of the mire and back up the table where they belong.
