Athletic Bilbao beat Deportivo for the first time in 37 years to move up level with their opponents on points. Both teams made changes for this match, with César coming in for the injured Naybet and Makkay returning in attack for the home side, and Aranzubia replacing the injured Lafuente in goal for the visitors. Bilbao's new manager Jupp Heynckes seems to have find the key to unlock the form of his three Spanish internationals, and Julen Guerrero gave the visitors the lead with his first goal in almost eight months.

Irureta brought on Sergio at the break, but Urzaiz put the Basque side further in front with a house special header soon after the restart. Deportivo finally woke up with half an hour to go, and after Capdevila hit the post with a shot, Diego Tristán pulled one back. However it was too late, and when Fran missed the easiest chance of the match near the end it was all over. This was only Depor's second home defeat in the league in over a year, and they have to pull themselves together for their Champions League game against Olympiakos next Tuesday.
