Sevilla increased their lead
at the top of the table after beating Compostela 0-2 on Saturday evening.
Michel opened the scoring in the first half after a mistake by the defence and
Héctor added the second after the interval with a header from Fredi's
free kick. Meanwhile second placed Tenerife lost 1-0 to Córdoba thanks
to a late headed goal by Melgar, leaving them now five points behind the
leaders. Tenerife's Lussenhof was sent off a few minutes before the end.
Córdoba move up to eighth after their third victory in a row.
Betis leap-frogged over
Tenerife into second place four points behind their city rivals thanks to a
last minute goal by Cuéllar against Salamanca. The visitors had taken
the lead though Rogerio but Casas made it all square before the break. Quique
Martín missed a penalty for the away side in the second half and
Salamanca were left with ten men after Pinilla picked up a second yellow card.
Atlético Madrid kept up their push for promotion, and they moved up a
place to fourth after beating Extremadura 2-0, their fifth home victory in a
row. Salva got both goals in the second half, the second from the penalty spot,
to take him to the top of the goalscorers' chart with seventeen. Off the field
of play, the judge looks set to return the club to the Gil family after a long
period under legal administration.
Recreativo Huelva held on to
their unbeaten home record by the skin of their teeth. A late goal by Bodipo
gave them a 1-1 draw against Leganés after Makukula had given the Madrid
based side the lead before the interval. Huelva lose ground though on the top
sides, as do Albacete, who drew 0-0 at Levante thanks largely to a magnificent
display by their keeper Cano. Both teams are on 53 points, two behind
Atlético. The promotion race now appears to be between the top six after
Sporting were beaten 3-1 by relegation candidates Getafe to drop four points
behind the leading group. Two from Faizulín and another from Mariano
Juan finished them off, with Manel replying for Sporting after Getafe's second
goal.
Getafe's victory takes them
on to 32 points, one behind Elche who lost 0-1 at home to next to bottom club
Universidad Las Palmas. The only goal came from an Alexis penalty, and Elche's
second manager of the season, Jorge D'Alessandro, was fired after the match,
with Marcial Pina taking over as caretaker. Racing Ferrol scraped a 1-1 draw
with Murcia thanks to a late Ante Razov goal after Zárate had opened the
scoring from the penalty spot. Murcia's Raúl Torres was sent off in the
second half. The point takes Racing ahead of Compostela on goal average, two
points above Elche.
Bottom club Lleida were
beaten 2-1 by Jaén, with Jurado scoring twice for the Andalucians and
Renaldo replying for the Catalans later on. The four relegation spots appear to
be between six clubs, with a five point gap to the next placed team
Leganés. Jaén move up to a comfortable position midtable, level
with Badajoz who beat Eibar 1-0. The two draw specialists appeared to be
heading for another boring score-less game before Mauricio stole the victory
with an injury time free kick which took a deflection off the defensive wall.
