Two matches on Saturday
evening, both affecting top teams, Sevilla and Tenerife. Sevilla extended their
lead at the top of the second division with a 3-0 victory over Extremadura.
Defender Héctor scored two goals in a three minute period in the first
half and Víctor added a third from the penalty spot after the break to
keep their unbeaten home record and take them up to 40 points, four ahead of
neighbours Betis and five ahead of Tenerife. The Canary Island side are losing
ground rapidly after defeats in their last two games, and they could only draw
against a Lleida side who were reduced to nine men after Lusarreta and Garrido
were sent off at the beginning and end of the second half respectively. Lleida
had taken the lead through David Díez in the first half, but a last
minute goal from Luis Gil saved a point against the Catalans, who stay next to
bottom in the table. On Sunday Betis drew 1-1 against the only other side
unbeaten at home, local rivals Recreativo Huelva. Capi gave the Sevilla based
team the lead on the break, but Xisco equalised near the end to take Recreativo
up a place to fourth. Betis substitute Gastón Casas was sent off five
minutes from the end, only a quarter of an hour after coming on.
Salamanca lost an
opportunity to move up to the top spots, falling 0-2 at home to Eibar. Having
won three in a row to close in on the leading group they came in to the game
with confidence against an Eibar side weakened by the recall of Xavi Alonso and
Joseba Llorente to Real Sociedad. However the Basques scored early through
Arenaza and closed ranks, and Juan Señor's side could not break through.
Then in the last minute of injury time Aguirre made it two as Salamanca threw
everything forward. Salamanca drop a place to fifth, still level on points with
Recreativo. Atlético Madrid suffered a cup hangover and lost their first
game in a month, 1-0 at Sporting, dropping back down the table to fifteenth.
Hernández was sent off for the second time in four days and the fourth
time this season and Sporting's Ledhiakov followed shortly afterwards. Soto
scored for the home side twelve minutes from time, and with most of their
rivals drawing, they move up to seventh. Badajoz also saw their nine game
undefeated run come to an end losing 2-1 at struggling Getafe. The game seemed
to be heading to a draw after Pepín made it all square following
Parrado's earlier strike, but Faizulin beat Baines in the last minute to give
his side a much needed victory.
In all there were no less
than seven low scoring draws, with the games between Jaén and
Compostela, Elche and Mucia, and Leganés and Universidad Las Palmas
ending 1-1. Jaén had not won at home for over two months, and they were
unable to do so against a Compostela team who had won their last two matches to
climb out of the relegation zone. The visitors scored through Juanito early on,
but Jaén equalised in the second with a Rueda header despite playing
with ten men after Milosevic was sent off just after the break. Sendings off
a-plenty at Elche, who ended up with nine men against ten for Murcia after
referee Moreno Delgado sent off Benja and Méndez in the first half and
Elche's Javi Navarro in the second. He also awarded a dubious penalty to the
visitors which Aguilar converted to cancel out Changui's second minute goal. It
was Murcia's third away win in a row and their first at Elche in over 50 years,
and it leaves Jorge D'Alessandro's men down within a point of the relegation
spots having not won at home since the end of September.
Bottom side Universidad just
missed out on their second win of the season when Julian Ronda levelled the
scores for Leganés in the fourth minute of injury time. They seemed to
be well on line after Alberto gave them the lead in the first half and then saw
their opponents reduced to ten men when Fede Marín got his second yellow
card just after half time. Argentina's Romagnoli became the first foreigner to
play for Universidad when he came on in the second half. Two goalless draws
also in the category this week ,with Albacete versus Córdoba and Levante
versus Racing Ferrol ending without any of the goalkeepers being troubled.
Albacete and Córdoba lost a bit of ground on the leaders, but both are
still in a group of nine teams separated by three points. Albacete have only
lost one of their last thirteen home games, whereas Levante have now gone five
at their Cuidad de Valencia stadium without a win. Lima missed a penalty for
them to let Racing off the hook, but the Ferrol side are still struggling third
from bottom in the league. |
