A weird weekend in the
second division, with matches involving nine out of the top ten teams ending
with single goal scorelines. In fact the only exception was third placed
Albacete, whose game at Racing Ferrol was suspended before the kick off due to
the bad state of the pitch, leaving them down at sixth place at the end of the
day. As both teams are out of the cup already, the tie will probably be played
on 3rd January. Leaders Tenerife kept top spot with a narrow 1-0 victory over
Murcia thanks to a goal by Martí in the first half. They move up to 34
points, one ahead of Sevilla who won 0-1 against local rivals Córdoba,
thanks to a goal in the first minute by Diego Ribera. Ribera refused to
celebrate the goal, as he played last season on loan from Espanyol in the
Córdoba side, a gesture much appreciated by the locals. The top two have
opened up a four point gap over the third placed team, who is none other than
Sevilla's city neighbours Betis. Their manager Fernando Vázquez drafted
in a couple of youngsters, Arzu and Joaquín, and the two combined for
Arzu to head the only goal of the game on the half hour mark against Sporting.
Rumours are that a big name could be joining the club in the winter break.
Could it be Denilson? Some people think so.
Recreativo extended their
incredible unbeaten run to nine games with a display of negative football that
cancelled out any creative play from their opponents. They rise up to fourth
after David gave them a victory against Elche with a late headed goal, leaving
them with a record of six wins, ten draws and one loss, and a goal average
after 17 games of 12 for, 6 against. Heaven help us if they get to the first
division next season. Elche's manager Felipe Mesones was fired after the game
as his team dropped to seventeenth. He is the fifth head to roll this season
after the destitution of the managers of Murcia, Atlético Madrid,
Universidad Las Palmas and of Getafe, who fired Enríquez last week.
Levante knocked Jaén off their perch after they beat Betis in the cup
midweek, keeping up their unbeaten away run with a first half goal by Lima to
go up to fifth. With all the one-nils, Salamanca's 1-3 victory over bottom club
Universidad Las Palmas was something of a goalscoring feat. Rumania's Munteanu
scored twice and Switzerland's Toedtli added the third, with Jonathan getting
one back for the Canary Islanders. Only around one thousand turned out to watch
a team that will surely be in the second division B next season. Salamanca go
up to seventh and are now back on line to return to the top spots which they
held for most of last season.
Another relatively high
scoring match was the one between Atlético Madrid and Lleida, which
ended with victory for the home side by 3-2. All the goals came in the first 50
minutes of the game, with the visitors taking the lead through their new
signing Oscar Alvarez, who had just joined on loan from Oviedo. Marcos Alonso
took off Gaspar halfway through the first half to put on Lawal, and the
Nigerian set up Aguilera for the equaliser. Salva gave Atleti the lead from the
penalty spot before half time, but a lack of concentration by keeper Toni after
the break let in Lusarreta. However Salva settled it a couple of minutes later,
following up after his second penalty of the day was blocked by Busquets, and
he now joins Luis García as the league's top scorers with nine apiece.
Atleti go up to fifteenth and Lleida stay next to last, ahead of Universidad
but behind Ferrol and Compostela, who got a point at home to Getafe in the
day's only draw. Gudelj gave the Gallicians the lead in the second half, but
Parrado levelled shortly afterwards. In the day's other mid-table clashes,
Badajoz moved up to eleventh after defeating Leganés with a first half
goal from Pedro Largo, and Extremadura take thirteenth spot after a 2-0 win
against Eibar, with second half goals from substitute Duré and a penalty
from David Karanka. |
