The match of the day was
without doubt in Madrid, where struggling Atlético met new leaders
Tenerife. The home team fans vented their anger at president Jesús Gil
and his players before the match, with banners demanding the resignation of the
president, and Hugo Leal was one of the main targets of their ire during the
game after the new Benfica president claimed that he would be returning to
Portugal in December. Aguilera did manage to put the home team in the lead just
after the break, but two goals from Luis García, the second from a
penalty after Toni brought him down in the area, gave the Canary Island side
the victory by 1-2. The defeat leaves Atlético once again in the
relegation zone in nineteenth place. Tenerife keep their lead at the top, level
on 21 points with Córdoba, who came back from behind against bottom club
Universidad Las Palmas to win 2-1, with goals from Espejo and Aldeondo in the
second half.
Jaén won one of the
many Andalucian derbies against early leaders Sevilla by 2-1 thanks to a late
Pepelu penalty to move up into third place, leaving their opponents out of the
top three for the first time this season. To make matters worse for Sevilla,
their eternal rivals Betis beat Murcia 2-1 with early goals from Amato and
Benjamín to move ahead of them into fourth place, a point behind
Jaén and two behind the leaders. At least the daughter of Murcia's
manager Pep Mel was happy - she is a lifelong supporter of Betis. Sevilla drop
to sixth, also behind Albacete on goal average after they came from behind to
draw 1-1 away at Getafe.
Two of the pre-season
promotion favourites, Levante and Salamanca, lost ground after losing their
respective matches. Levante were beaten at home for the first time this season,
0-2 by Leganés, who were reduced to ten men for the last few minutes,
and Salamanca lost to Compostela 2-1, a result which takes the Gallician side
above Atlético Madrid and out of the relegation zone. The game was
played in a torrential rain storm (as were many in Spain this weekend), with
Gudelj coming off the subs bench to score less than a minute after coming on,
and Quique Martín giving the home supporters a fright with a late goal.
Elche and Sporting also did themselves no favours, cancelling each other with a
2-2 draw. Sporting went into a two goal lead through Soto and Tcheryshev in the
first half, but Elche salvaged a point with a spectacular overhead kick from
Iván Rocha after Nino had pulled one back.
The Extremadura derby also
ended also square at 1-1, with visitors Extremadura going ahead with a penalty
seven minutes from time and Badajoz levelling scores a minute later. This was
Badajoz's sixth draw, still one less than Recreativo Huelva, who drew their
seventh, 1-1 against Lleida. Recreativo are ninth, despite having only scored
seven goals (and let in four) in their eleven games. Lleida stay next to bottom
with seven points, a point ahead of Universidad and one below Racing Ferrol,
who lost 0-1 against another low scoring team, Eibar. |
