The match of the day was in
Madrid, where a capacity crowd of 50,000 fans turned up to watch
Atlético play leaders Córdoba. The home side appeared to have won
when Cubillo converted a penalty five minutes from time after Kiko was brought
down in the area. However referee Arcas Piqueras awarded a second penalty in
injury time, this time to the visitors, and Melgar levelled the scores at 1-1.
The draw keeps Córdoba in top spot on 18 points, one ahead of
Jaén, who beat Murcia 2-1, and Sevilla, who were defeated 2-0 by fifth
placed Levante. Jaén went one down to an early penalty from Murcia's
Aguilar, but came back later in the first half with goals from Sierra and
Torres to move ahead of the Andalucians on goal average into second spot.
Sevilla were reduced to ten men after Pablo Alfaro was sent off just before
half time, and hung on until the last ten minutes, when goals from Salillas and
Roa finished them off. Salillas, last year's top scorer in the second division,
moves to the front of the table once again with his fifth of the season.
Tenerife are making a come
back, and they moved up to fifth with a 1-2 victory at Racing Ferrol. Two goals
in six minutes by Luis García set them on their way in the second half,
with Borja pulling one back later on for the Gallicians. They are on 15 points,
running neck and neck with Betis, who beat Extremadura 1-0 with a goal by
Filipescu just before half time. The oldest club in the Spanish league,
Recreativo Huelva, lost ground when they were held at home 0-0 by Salamanca.
However their goalkeeper César did save them a point with a series of
great saves, and they drop to eighth on 14 points, level on points with seventh
placed Murcia and ninth placed Albacete, who beat Elche 0-1 with a late goal by
Javi Guerrero.
Down at the bottom,
Universidad Las Palmas sank even further after losing 3-1 to Badajoz. All the
goals came in the second half. Getafe won the other relegation battle 2-1
against Lleida to climb out of the bottom four spots, leaving Lleida next to
bottom on 5 points. They are still two ahead of Universidad, but three behind
the team above them, Compostela, who won their first game at home, 2-1 against
Eibar. Racing Ferrol are the fourth team in the relegation spots, level on
eight points with Compostela. |
