Las Palmas saw out the end
of the season with a victory in a match in which neither side had anything to
play for. Both managers were expected to leave after this match, with Sergio
Kresic being tempted away by offers from other clubs, and Juande Ramos
announcing he would certainly be leaving after a successful three years in
charge. There were other farewells too, with Las Palmas captain Paquito leaving
after nine years at Las Palmas, and referee Andradas Asurmendi making his final
bow before retiring. Paquito was one of five changes in Kresic's starting line
up, with third choice keeper amador getting a reward for loyalty with his first
game of the season, and Samways returning to favour after being left out for
his bust up with Nacho González. Ramos too made five changes, with
Keller away on international duty and Pablo Sanz returning after a six month
lay off through injury.
The match was played in a
relaxed atmosphere, and Andradas didn't even have to show one yellow card in
the full 90 minutes. Schurrer saved the home side in the tenth minute when he
scooped the ball off the line after Michel had lobbed Amador, and Bolic put a
shot just wide. But Las Palmas came back, and after Guayre brushed the post,
Orlando went one better after Samways and Paquito combined to set him up. The
Canary Islanders could have extended their lead when Ballesteros brought down
Orlando in the penalty area, but the referee didn't want to ruin his record and
waved away the protests.
Things quietened down in the
second half, and the local fans amused themselves by waving their handkerchiefs
at the directors' box in protest at their management which has left the club on
the brink of financial ruin. Michel came close to levelling the scores, but by
now nobody was really interested in the football, and the game petered out in
the last few minutes. Las Palmas go a place above their opponents into eleventh
place, a more than reasonable display in their first year back in the top
flight. However they will have to sell their best young players to survive, and
with Brazilians Alvaro and Baiano suspended for six months following the
passport scandal as well, they will have trouble putting together a competitive
side for next season. Rayo are just thankful it is over after a rotten second
half to the season, and are looking forward to a well earned rest before
starting all over again in August. |
