Oviedo put in their best
performance of the season to beat a poor Athletic Bilbao by five clear goals.
Bilbao were never in the game from start to finish, and if were not for their
keeper Lafuente it could have been more. It was just what Radomir Antic's team
needed to give them confidence for the run in to the end of the season, and it
signified their first victory at the Nuevo Tartiere stadium in over three
months. With half an hour gone they were already three up, Paunovic opening the
scoring with his second in two games, Oli adding a second after Onopko headed
on Esteban's long clearance, and Danjou getting the third from Tomic's pass.
Paunovic could have made it four a couple of minutes later if Lafuente had not
stood his ground, and Larrainzar cleared Oli's header off the line just
afterwards.
At half time Txetxu Rojo
brought on another forward Cuéllar in place of Oscar Vales, but nothing
changed, and Oli scored the fourth within four minutes of the restart. Bilbao
were humiliated, and when Paunovic completed the rout six minutes later they
hid their heads in shame. The introduction of Merino and Javi González
with seventeen minutes to go improved things slightly, and González even
brought a save out of Esteban with five minutes to go, but the day belonged to
the Asturians, who moved up to fifteenth in the league, four points now away
from the drop zone. Bilbao stay in eleventh place, their season effectively
over, and Rojo can only start planning for next season, assuming that is that
he is still there in three months time. Elections for the new president of the
club are due to take place soon, and his future depends to a large extent on
who wins. Zaragoza are very keen to get him back, and after this season nobody
is doing much to stop him going. |
