Powerful header into top corner after cross from Gustavo López.
Celta moved away from the
nether reaches of the first division with a narrow victory over Oviedo. The
scoreline though doesn't do justice to Celta's domination of the game, with
Oviedo barely managing a shot on goal throughout the match. Celta were for once
at what could be considered full strength, with Juanfran and Karpin returning
after a one match ban and Giovanella and Mostovoi coming back in. Oviedo were
missing their midfield powerhouse Onopko who was out injured, and with
Collymore still overweight and not anywhere near fit enough to play a full 90
minutes, Antic went for the fashionable 4-2-3-1 line-up with Oli playing alone
up front.
And Oli was the only one to
trouble Cavallero in the first half, the home-grown forward being incorrectly
ruled offside when he only had the keeper to beat. Other than that it was all
Celta, although Oviedo's disciplined back four left little space for the
forwards to work, and their actual attempts at goal were few and far between.
Esteban was on top form in the visitors' goal, saving a long shot by Vagner in
the first half and another effort by Karpin just after the break. As usual
Celta's attacks came down the wings, and just before the hour mark Catanha made
the break through after a cross from Gustavo López out on the left.
Antic decided it was about
time for Stan-the-man to come on, but once more he contributed nothing in what
was probably to be his last appearance for the club. Celta continued to attack
and only Esteban stood in the way of a large defeat, saving at close range from
Edu near the end amongst others. With Víctor about to make his third
substitution, frantic signals from Cavallero in the goalmouth made him change
his mind, which was just as well as the keeper had to go off immediately with
an injury, Pinto coming on to play out the last three minutes or so. The result
keeps up Celta's recent excellent form, and takes them up to thirteenth in the
table. Oviedo fall to their fifth defeat in a row, and now have the four
relegation candidates snapping at their feet, with Numancia only a point behind
themand Real Sociedad at three. They need a victory in their next home match or
Antic will be history. Relegation looms. |
