Valladolid kept up their
unbeaten home record thanks to their two veterans, Caminero and Eusebio, who
scored a goal in each half to take their team up to the top half of the table.
Caminero returned to the side after a one match ban, and Jesús was also
called back after his three match suspension was put on hold pending an
appeal.Zaragoza had not won in Valladolid since 1964, but with Esnaider in the
side they have not lost this season, so they had high hopes of a result. Toro
Acuña missed the game through suspension, but Pablo returned in defence
after an injury. There were rare appearances on the two substitutes' benches
too, with Valladolid's third choice keeper Jon Ander being rewarded with a
place, and Zaragoza's Peternac being applauded as he returned to the ground
where he had played for many seasons.
Zaragoza have had an up and
down season, and after scoring five last week at home they went back in to
their shells for this match. Valladolid took the lead in the 20th minute when
Bizzarri came out of his area to clear upfield, the ball landing to Caminero
for him to shoot under Juanmi. However the ex Atlético Madrid midfielder
had to go off before half time with an injury. Juanmi produced two solid saves
from Eusebio and Fernando before the break to keep Zaragoza in the game, and
was called on again to stop Pachón early in the second half. Then an
extraordinary decision by Pérez Burrull gave the visitors a chance, the
referee deciding that Heinze had handled in the area when he had clearly been
fouled by Esnaider, receiving a boot in the face for his pains. However
Esnaider wasted the penalty, putting it way over the bar, and Valladolid were
let off the hook.
The home side increased
their lead twelve minutes from the end through Eusebio, placing the ball wide
of the keeper after Ciric laid it back from inside the area, and Fernando
should have made it three five minutes later when he put the ball over the bar
from a couple of yards out. Ferrón came on for Zaragoza for the last ten
minutes and almost put his side back in the game, shooting just wide and then
claiming a penalty for a possible foul by Heinze. But Pérez Burrull
decided that one was enough and said no. The result meant that Valladolid jump
above their rivals to tenth, with Zaragoza dropping to fourteenth, two points
behind. Both look like ending up midtable this season. |
