Both teams started this
local Basque derby knowing that a bad result would leave them at the bottom of
the first division. Osasuna were already in last place and were looking for
their first home victory of the season, and Bilbao were looking to kick-start a
season that so far has not got off the ground. However neither did themselves
any favours with a 1-1 draw that left them both floundering down in the lower
reaches of the table. Osasuna manager Miguel Angel Lotina has been in need of a
reliable striker all season, and once again he rotated Iván Rosado and
Armentano, with the Argentinian getting the nod for this game. He did however
bring in his secret weapon on the bench, Cuco Ziganda returning to the squad
and coming on late in the second half against the side he played for during
several seasons.
Bilbao themselves had an ex
Osasuna player on their bench, Tiko, and he entered the pitch as the same time
as Ziganda, also making his first appearance of the season. The reaction of the
capacity crowd, who by this time were thoroughly drenched from the constant
downpour, was very different for the two however, with Cuco being cheered on by
both sets of fans, and Tiko being accused of being a moneygrabber for changing
clubs. By the time they came on though the game was already over and both teams
had settled for the draw. Athletic had started well and it was no surprise when
they took the lead, although they had to do it from the penalty spot to beat
Nuno. A few minutes later Urzaiz hit the post, but after that they settled back
to defend their lead, handing over control to the Pamplona team.
That was a mistake as
Osasuna went for the jugular, playing their aggressive pressure football and
not allowing their opponents time to settle on the ball. Lafuente saved from
Sabino, Angel and Alex before Osasuna equalised from one of their many corners,
Armentano poking the ball home sitting on the ground after Urrutia's clearance
went straight at him. Sensing a victory they kept up the attack, with Sabino
hitting the bar and Lafuente salvaging a point with two more great saves near
the end. Txetxu Rojo called it a day, bringing on Imaz for his first appearance
of the season to play out time. A point apiece, and both have to wait another
week at least before starting their respective revivals. |
