Oviedo are the Jekyll and
Hyde team of the league, unbeatable in their home stadium, but unable to win
away, despite playing with more or less the same players in every match. Last
season they saved themselves with a magnificent run late in the season in the
old Tartiere stadium, despite only winning one game away. And history seems to
be repeating itself in the Nuevo Tartiere ground, with ten of their eleven
points coming from their four games at home. In this match they completely
dominated Rayo Vallecano with a display of attacking football, despite going a
goal behind early in the first half.
To put things in perspective
though, Rayo's manager Juande Ramos had made things a bit easier for them,
resting five of his first choice players to give their replacements a chance.
Out went keeper Lopetegui, with Kasey Keller coming back for his first league
match this season, having only played in the UEFA cup matches up to now.
Urbano, Ferreira and Mauro also got rare starts, with Glaucio coming back in
place of Bolic. They started well, with Oviedo apparently suffering a hangover
after their defeat at Espanyol over the weekend. Bolo gave an early warning,
with a shot which Esteban saved well, and on the half hour mark he gave his
side the lead with a well struck free kick. The Asturian side finally came out
of their trance, and Tomic levelled the scores with the goal of the day, a shot
from over 30 metres which Keller didn't even see. On the stroke of half time
they were in the lead, oli scoring his third in two matches at home with a
header back past the keeper.
Juande went for broke with
the second half ten minutes old, putting on two more forwards, Bolic and
Bartelt, for Ferreira and Mauro. That only gave Oviedo more opportunities, and
they scored two more through Iván Ania and then through Rubén,
whose shot span slowly off a defender and hit a post before Keller helped it
into the goal. Although the Rayo defenderscomplained, television pictures later
showed that the keeper had taken the ball completely over the line with his leg
and that the goal was legal. To make matters worse, referee Turienzo Alvarez
sent off Glaucio for protesting, the Brazilian having already picked up a first
yellow card earlier in the game. All in all Turienzo showed eleven yellows and
one red, and also upset Bolo and his manager when he failed to give a penalty
earlier in the game. That was fairly academic though, and Rayo fell to their
second defeat in a row, dropping down the table to seventh, with Oviedo now
only a point and a place below them. |
