Walter Pandiani and
Djalminha both made brief appearances in the second half for Deportivo La
Coruña, but between them they saved this match and kept their team in
second place in the league. They came on within a few minutes of the start of
the second half just after Real Sociedad were reduced to ten men, as Irureta
made changes to try and pull back from a goal down. Deportivo were awarded an
indirect free kick outside of the area, and Djalminha's kick found the head of
Pandiani, who steered it past Asper for the equaliser. A minute later Pandiani
was on his way to the dressing rooms after a vicious tackle from behind on
Aranburu which earned him a direct red card from referee López Nieto.
Djalminha, who was nursing a knee injury, only lasted seven minutes longer
before he had to go off again, the player leaving the pitch in tears after
realizing that the injury was worse than he thought.
Javier Clemente made three
changes to his side, dropping youngsters Gurrutxaga and Jauregui, and Russia's
Khokhlov after losing heavily to Celta last week. Irureta brought back
Víctor, and gave Helder a start in place of Naybet. Within five minutes
Real took the lead, Jankauskas galloping on to a long ball down the right
touchline, beating the offside trap and running on to score past Molina, the
first goal he has let in in the league this season. Depor came back and Asper
saved from Fran and Víctor, with Jankauskas and Idiakez trying to lob
Molina at the other end.
Four minutes into the second
half, López Nieto sent off Loren for a second bookable offence, Clemente
brought on an extra defender Gurrutxaga for a disappointed De Pedro, and the
Pandiani-Djalminha show began. After they both left centre stage things calmed
down a bit, with Tristán still trying to get off the mark for his new
club without much help from his colleagues, and Molina keeping out efforts from
the Real forwards. The draw keeps Deportivo in second place, ahead of Real
Madrid on goal average, with Real Sociedad still without a win in the bottom
part of the table. |
