Following on from our lead-in
last week, the fat lady has now left the tea shop and is on her way to the
theatre, although it will still be a bit of time before she starts to sing.
However Las Palmas got a stranglehold on the second division on Saturday night
with an important 0-2 victory at Badajoz, taking them a little bit closer to
promotion. Josico opened the scoring in the first half and Eloy added another
in the second to give them their fourth victory in a row and keep them in the
top spot on 62 points. Villarreal kept up their unbeaten run of eight games,
but ended Leganés run of nine with a 2-0 win, with goals from
Moisés (his 17th of the season) and Jorge López. They stay a
point behind the leaders in second, and are themselves a point ahead of third
placed Extremadura, who beat Recreativo 1-0 with a second half goal by Rueda.
With the teams immediately below them losing, the top three open up a gap of
three points over Osasuna, who move fourth after a good 1-3 away win against
ten-man Elche. Iván Rosado scored twice in the first half, including a
penalty. Salamanca finally returned to winning ways after eleven games without
a victory. Their new on-loan signing from Real Sociedad Bonilla scored on his
home debut, and Quique Martín added a second after Josemi had equalised
for the Catalans. Salamanca leapfrog their rivals into fifth place on 56
points. Promotion hopefuls Sporting and Tenerife both lost ground losing at
home 0-1 to bottom club Toledo and to Mérida respectively. Tenerife, who
had another new manager Angel Cappa on the bench this week, could not score
even after their opponents were reduced to nine men early in the second half.
Levante drew back level with Lleida and Sporting after a good 3-0 victory
against Atlético Madrid B, with two goals from top scorer Salillas, who
moves on to twenty for the season. Atlético B drop down in to the bottom
four relegation spots, but they will probably go down anyway if their first
team are relegated from the top division. Córdoba got their promotion
campaign back on track as well with a late 0-1 victory at Getafe, and they are
level with Tenerife on 53 points. Down near the bottom, Compostela climbed out
of the bottom four with a dull score-less draw at Eibar, and they are three
points ahead of Recreativo and Logroñes, who drew 2-2 at Albacete. They
have 39 points each, with Toledo way adrift on 32.
