With eight games still
remaining, only four points separate the top eleven teams in the Spanish second
division. Lleida's brief spell at the top was ended by Las Palmas, who beat
them 1-0 with a second half headed goal by Brazil's Renaldo. This was the
Canary Island team's first home win in three months, but it still took them to
top spot on Saturday night. Extremadura are just behind Las Palmas on goal
average after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Logroñes. Duré
got their goal in the second half. Lleida drop to third, heading a group of
three teams a point behind the leaders. Villarreal move up to fourth after
beating Toledo 1-3, with two first half goals by Javi López, and
Salamanca drop out of the promotion places to fifth after drawing 0-0 at
Córdoba. This was the first time that Salamanca were out of the top
three since early in the season. Sporting Gijon moved back into the running
after winning their second game in a row since firing their manager a fortnight
ago, rising five places to sixth. Their new keeper Valencia, on loan from
Sevilla to the end of the season to replace the injured Sánchez, kept
the Tenerife forwards at bay, and Russians Tcherishev and Ledhiakov got a goal
apiece. In the Madrid derby, Leganés and Getafe played out a goal-less
match which did not help either team, and the other Madrid side Atlético
B moved up the table after beating Eibar 2-0, a result which may well be
meaningless if they are forced to drop down a division if their first team are
relegated. If that happens it could benefit Recreativo, who gave themselves a
lifeline and at the same time knocked Levante's promotion hopes on the head
with a goal from Pablo in the last minute. Compostela stayed third from bottom
after drawing with Albacete, and in fact the bottom eleven clubs all kept their
places in the league table this week, with many teams also drawing, including
the games Osasuna versus Badajoz, and Mérida versus Elche.
