The second division is red hot
(well, let's just say luke warm), with the top ten teams only separated by
three points after the day's results. Leaders Salamanca lost again, this time
at Osasuna to a single goal by Vasiljevic, and they finally gave up their top
spot to Extremadura. Salamanca's defeat cost Mariano García Remón
his job, the manager being replaced by caretaker manager Baltazar
Sánchez immediately after the match. Extremadura finally won away for
the first time in six months, Fredi getting the only goal of the match in the
first half against promotion rivals Las Palmas. They move up to the top on 51
points, with Salamanca still second on 50. There then follows a group of five
teams on 49 points (Lleida, Las Palmas, Córdoba, Levante and Osasuna)
and another group of three (Villarreal, Tenerife and Leganés) a point
behind. At the end of the season what counts is the particular goal average
between teams level on points, but at this stage the table is based on the
general goal average. On that basis Lleida move up to third after beating 10
man Compostela away by 1-2. Córdoba were the only one of the top teams
to play on Saturday, and they moved temporarily up to second after defeating
struggling Logroñes by 1-0. Ribera got their goal. By close of play on
Sunday night they were down to fifth, but they are the most on form team at the
moment and have a good chance of getting in to the top three. Tenerife's
situation was even more bizarre. Playing an hour later than the rest (Canary
Isles time is an hour later than on the peninsular), they went in at half time
leading 1-0 (goal by Lussendorf), and at that stage they were joint second.
Three minutes into the second half Vicente equalised for Levante, and they
found themselves down at ninth. Villarreal got a good win against Sporting to
take them out of the promotion race, at least for the time being. The league's
second top scorer Moisés got his fifteenth of the season to give the
visitors the three points. Leganés also joined the leading group with a
late goal by Merino against Albacete which gave them victory. The situation at
the bottom is becoming clearer, with the last four all losing and a three point
gap opening up between them and the rest. Bottom club Toledo lost 1-2 at home
to Eibar and Recreativo lost to Elche by the same score. Mérida moved
away from the drop zone at the expense of Getafe, and Atlético B got a
valuable point at home to Badajoz.
