Logic prevailed in the end in
the second legs of the quarter finals, with both Barcelona teams and the top
two Madrid sides going through to the semi-finals. The Madrid sides had to
fight however, with both Atlético and Real going through on the rule
that away goals count double. Atlético had been held to a score-less
draw in their own stadium by city rivals Rayo Vallecano in the first leg, and
knew they had to score to qualify. They didn't have to wait long, with
Hasselbaink taking just two minutes to beat Lopetegui after a good pass by
Santi. Rayo weren't going to give up that easily, and came back with a
spectacular goal in each half by Michel II, leaving Atlético's reserve
keeper Toni stranded on both occasions. They made the mistake however of
falling back into their own half, and with just two minutes left Baraja headed
the goal which took the Colchoneros through. Real Madrid went to Mérida
to play their second game in three days, needing a long game like a hole in the
defence. They were made to suffer by a team struggling in the second division,
who took the game into extra time with a silly own goal by Madrid keeper
Illgner, returning to the side after a long injury. Illgner couldn't get out of
the way of a strong low cross by De Quintana shortly before half time, and the
ball ricocheted off his legs into his own net. That equalled the first leg
score in Madrid, and it was left once again to one of the super-babes,
Zárate, to save the day. He replaced Madrid's last fit striker,
Morientes, victim of a muscle injury just after Mérida's goal, and he
repeated his goal in the first leg with another strike from outside of the area
in the first half of extra time. Prieto pulled one back two minutes from the
end, but it was too late. The two Barcelona based teams had no such drama, both
having virtually qualified with four goal differences from the first leg. FC
Barcelona had one of their worst crowds ever (a friend of mine called to ask
what time the game started and they asked him what time he could turn up), with
more people from Osasuna than home supporters. Van Gaal rested some of his key
players including Rivaldo and Kluivert, although a strange ruling that only a
maximum of three youngsters can play in cup matches meant that he couldn't rest
more. Litmanen scored in the first minute and Dani added a second in the second
half to put Barcelona through 6 - 0 on aggregate. Espanyol also rested some of
their regular players with a 5 - 1 result from the first leg, and they were
always in control despite losing the match by 1 - 0. Gudelj scored from the
penalty spot halfway through the second half. The draw for the semi-finals
takes place next Friday, 25th February, and the ties will be played over two
legs in April, with the final at the end of May. |
